A Message from the Guild Secretary

I’m not sure where November disappeared to – one minute it was Bonfire night, the next I’ve been to my first Christmas dinner. Just a few weeks to go until the shortest day, then it’s a gradual uphill slope to spring (she says optimistically!). Christmas to deal with first. I’m hoping that you’re getting ready for the various services and events that take place.

ART awards

The annual ART awards are open for nominations again. There are a range of awards, there’s no need to be an ART teacher or ringer to nominate someone for an award. Have a look at the criteria and think about who you could nominate. We should be celebrating success and centres of good practice; this is an opportunity to do just that.

All the details can be found here: https://cccbr.org.uk/2022/11/15/the-art-awards-are-back/

CCCBR news

Two President’s blogs for you to catch up on.

The coronation of King Charles III on 6th May next year provides a possible focus for recruitment. The CCCBR has started putting together some materials to help support this under the headline “Ring for the King”. These can be found here: https://cccbr.org.uk/bellringing/ring-for-the-king/

Castor Branch Practice

The monthly branch practice is this Friday 4th November at Castor, 1930h.

Please consider coming if you can ring Bob minor and would now like to move to eight bells.

For my experienced eight bell ringers: the special method will be Double Norwich Court Bob (an oldy but a goody).

See you there, or if you are not sure whether the practice is for you then drop me an email to discuss.

Tony Evans Anecdotes, Augmentations & Tower Maintenance

Hii fellow Branch members,

I’ve made some tentative inquiries to see if anyone is submitting a ringing tribute to the RW for Tony and not had any feedback as yet. If no one has picked up the baton I’m happy to help coordinate and use the basis of the tributes shared at his funeral?

However it would be good to include some ringing anecdotes, along with the extensive tower/bell repairs to make bells ringable again, inc. augmenting. With that in mind please can you share such by 23:00hrs on 27th Oct. Similarly if you have anything ringing wise to add to the Bellboard memoriam link can you also let me know so I can hold submission to the RW to include any further ringing planned.

Link currently stands as follows:

Many thanks,

Andrew Christie

Tony’s Funeral Monday 17th October at 2:45pm @ St Kynaburgha’s -Update

A few additions to mention from previous communications.

Joan has been in regular contact with Rosemary and there is a service at the crematorium prior to St Kyneburgha’s for family members. Rosemary is delighted to hear that the bells will be rung before, from 2pm and after the thanksgiving service and she especially asked if those that knew Tony could join the Castor ringers for the ringing beforehand.

Two further requests that Joan is kindly coordinating for Rosemary are as follows:

If you are coming to the service they are seeking a rough idea on number of service booklets needed.

Secondly the wake is going to be at the White Hart in Ufford. Everyone is warmly welcomed by the family. However to help catering requirements please can you let Joan know by tomorrow evening on both these points.

Joan’s address is: joanparker1934@gmail.com

Tony will be greatly missed for his joie de vive, sense of humour, bell maintenance including augmenting and renewal of bells, tutoring and training and steadfast encouragement to everyone he came into contact with.

May he rest in peace and rejoice in paradise.

Funerals for Ian Burroughs and Tony Evans

It is very sad to hear of the deaths of Ian Burroughs and Tony Evans, two long standing ringers in the Peterborough Branch, and I thought ringers might want to know the arrangements for their funerals

Many people will have known Ian as the Tower Captain at Barnack, and will have rung with him in the past. His funeral is at 1pm on Tuesday 11 October at Barnack. Bells will be rung after the service.

Tony was a key member of the band at Castor for many years, and he was the instigator of a teaching facility at Castor, that then became the Castor Ringing School. His funeral is at Castor on Monday 17 October at 2.45pm. Bells will be rung by the Castor band.

As the current Head Tutor of the School, I propose to ring one or more Quarter Peals in Tony’s memory, comprising ringers who were taught to ring by Tony. If you are interested in joining us, please will you let me know through the following link, https://petbells.org.uk/contact/events-organiser/ and I will ensure that all those who want to are included in any ringing we organise.

Best wishes,

Hilary Hardie
